International Congress On Algae Biofuels To Single Out The Prototype Developed By A University To Produce Bio-oil

Developed by scientists at the Department of Marine Sciences and Applied Biology, University of Alicante in collaboration with the company BioFuel BFS Systems, the compounds that get this prototype have a value in the market, with an efficiency ten thousand times greater than that of any other known energy crops.

The International Congress of Biomass Obtaining and Biofuels Production from Algae to be developed at the University of Alicante in October 30 and 31 is not surprising. In addition to the full program of lectures given by renowned international experts, the event attending will know firsthand this unique prototype called “Airemar”.

The device converts CO2 into biofuel from marine microalgae cultivation, which absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and converts it into biomass that derives in biofuel. The resulting product was named bio-oil.

According to Cristian Gomis, scientific director of the project and professor at the UA, the novelty is that it is “profitable” as it is obtained from biomass can also be processed into products that have market value, as cellulose or pharmacy products.
Furthermore, accurate efficiency is ten thousand times higher than in any other known energy source, because it took ten thousand times less surface area and makes it 365 times faster than any other crop that takes years to become one. “Therefore, he assured that this system could “mitigate” the effects of climate change by not releasing the carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, but reusing it”.

Congress and two exhibition areas

Seeking to increase the interest of the congress, the organization has enabled two exhibition areas are open to interested companies. In the first of these, this prototype will be exhibited along with other important bio-reactors and machinery specified on the part of prominent companies as Algaelink (Netherlands). A second zone will allow the latest technological advances with regard to the production of biofuels from algae, through corporate videos, and informational posters miscellaneous artwork, companies and researchers will present free of charge.

International Experts

The congress is set for twelve presentations given by some of the most renowned experts in the field. Researchers and entrepreneurs with extensive experience in depth not only address the scientific aspects but also the technical possibilities and the viability of projects on both micro and macroalgae for the production of biodiesel and bioethanol for.

Of great scientific career as Anastasios Melis, University of Berkeley (California), an international expert in the study of algae as producing hydrogen for power generation, John Munford, an independent British scientist or Stefan Kraan (Irish Seaweed Center) will released their latest discoveries. The corporate vision is completed with representatives from companies such as Biofuel Systems (Spain), Biofields (Mexico), Origin Oil Inc. (USA), Energy Kema (Netherlands), Fluor SA Oil and Fox S.A. (Argentina).
Finally, concern, and environmental protection will be reflected in a significant way with the presentation developed by the representation of the Spanish Program on Climate Change led by Al Gore.

The International Congress Obtaining Biomass and Biofuels Production from Algae, will be held at the University of Alicante, the next 30 to October 31, 2008. A unique opportunity to be aware of the feasibility and effective of what many call “a real substitute for oil: algae.
