Alternative Energy

Generically, it is called Alternative energy, or rather alternative energy sources, those sources of energy raised as an alternative to the traditional or classic. However, there is no consensus on what technologies are included in this concept and the definition of “alternative energy” varies for different authors: in the more restrictive definitions, alternative energy would be equivalent to the concept of renewable energy or green power, while that broader definitions considered alternative energy to all energy sources that do not involve the burning of fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil) in these definitions, as well as renewables, nuclear energy included or hydropower.

Fossil fuels have been the source of energy used during the first and second industrial revolution, but now have essentially two problems: first are finite resources, and providing for the exhaustion of reserves, especially oil-in deadlines, according to the published studies. Moreover, the burning of these fuels releases large amounts of atmospheric CO2, which has been accused of being the main cause of global warming. For these reasons, we study various options to replace the burning of fossil fuels by other energy sources devoid of these problems.

Alternative energies fall into two broad groups:

• Renewables (wind, solar, biomass, etc.).
• Nuclear energy.

Not everyone agrees to classify nuclear energy in the alternative energy group, for like fossil fuels is a finite resource, and also presents significant environmental problems, such as management of radioactive waste or the possibility of a nuclear accident. However, the reduced CO2 emissions from this technology, and the still weak capacity of renewable energy to completely replace fossil fuels, nuclear energy makes an alternative subject to much controversy.
