Ecological Golf Course In Hong Kong Uses Cars With Solar Panels

A golf course in Hong Kong where air pollution is a major concern is showing interest in the environment with the first full squad of cars to transport the athletes using solar energy.

In the 205 cars of the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course batteries were installed with solar panels on the roof, in collaboration between the University of Hong Kong and an engineering company based in Denmark SolarDrive.

Golf carts can capture solar energy and convert daylight into enough power to push them over the year, even on cloudy days.

The cars load themselves as they are used.

The golf club estimated that switching to solar energy will reduce carbon emissions in 30 tons per year and will save the club more than $ 50,000 a year.

General Manager Cameron Halliday said the club believed it would save between 50 and 70 percent of energy consumption of the fleet and extend the battery life of vehicles from 2 to 4 years.

“We anticipate that each year will save us $ 400,000 Hong Kong dollars (51,610 U.S. dollars) in operating the fleet of 205 cars,” Halliday told Reuters Television.

The golfer Charles Regan said it was a great idea.

“I think many golf courses should adopt the same system. They are fantastic,” said Regan.

Hong Kong often suffers from poor air quality, and sometimes its iconic port is wrapped in a thick cloud of chemical contamination.

The plan is part of an environmental project of $ 45 million to the city level initiated by the Jockey Club Charities Trust in response to global warming and climate change.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club opened two golf courses in 1995 and added a third in 2008. The agency argues that wildlife has recovered and has grown rapidly.
