Solar Energy and Pollution

Each family that installs a solar energy system stops releasing to the environment an average of 1.6 tons of carbon dioxide. Germany, Israel and Spain, among other nations, are already using it massively to mitigate climate change and pollution.

Last Saturday saw the worst levels of air quality since 1999. Despite efforts to mitigate the problem, go three pre-emergency in May and the crisis remains. Air pollution has become the major environmental conflict in Santiago, affecting directly the quality of life and health of people.

Although during the cold months, air quality tends to worsen, this year the weather has worsened the scenario. In poorly ventilated basin joins the rainfall deficit that reached 46.1%.

But the main cause of pollution is the combustion processes in industry, transportation and residential heating. The constant cuts in Argentine gas supplies have forced a considerable number of plants using oil or coal again to address the trasandine shortage.

Although the global trend is for clean energy sources, India is well behind 20 years in the field. And ratifying figures: according to the National Environment Commission (CONAMA), only 2.4% of total energy used in the country belongs to renewable energies.

Among the energy alternatives, the one with greatest potential is solar energy. For those who think their use is limited to northern cities for their excellent weather, are wrong.

Germany is the leading European country in solar energy use. Although, its level of radiation is similar to Coyhaique. In 2003 they settled nearly one million 500 thousand square meters of photovoltaic panels.
