Robbery of Solar Panels

It was only a matter of time to start having this problem, solar panel robbery.

According to the new norm, the new buildings are forced to have solar panels to complement the provision of energy; but, is it worth the trouble to have them in a house considering the existence of the robbery risk?

From ADT, company dedicated to security and protection; assure that the owners of houses with solar panels do not have to worry, since they are not the potential victims of these thieves. Being located normally in the tile roof, they make difficult its access and its later transport. Ignacio Cuenca, director of ADT marketing, notices that those are the proprietors of solar orchards that must be alert of possible robberies, since usually they are located in isolate and easily accessible zones for the thieves.

In order to carry out its crime, the thieves, according to Ignacio Cuenca, first they jump the fence that marks the perimeter of the orchard. They obtain it, if necessary, using a truck pen or simply cutting the iron door if one is it enmeshes metallic. Once within the orchard, the supports of the connected solar panels to a motor go to the followers – device that allows panels to follow the sunlight during the day) of which they disassemble the solar panels.

This entails, sometimes, the failure of the following motor. Therefore, the damage for the proprietors is not as much the loss of plates, whose replacement ascends to about 600 Euros each, but the impossibility of being able to continue generating an energy that, according to ADT, is paid of six to seven times its cost by the electrical companies to which it is sold. Therefore, the investors of solar orchards and the insurers demand the hiring of security services that prevent possible robberies that delay the recovery of the initial investment.

Considering the procedure that these thieves follow, and the situation of the solar orchards; the solution that proposes Ignacio Cuenca in order to guarantee the security, consists of the following things: when being in isolated places, hiring of monitoring personnel would be very expensive, reason why the peripheral protection has to reinforce itself, so that if somebody undesired one tries to enter the orchard, the most possible robbery slows down.

Also it must have movable security cameras and movement detectors inside the orchard that allow determining where is the thief, if he has been able to enter. So that the personnel of security located far from the orchard can carry out the pertinent actions in case of robbery, all the systems must be connected to the power station of alarms via satellite or GPRS, since a connection through Internet would be too expensive, due to the isolation from the place where usually, telecommunication technologies do not arrive. With these measures, proprietors of solar orchards, normally families, cover themselves with possible additional costs of repair and, even, they get reductions on their insurance policy.
