De1890 Americans were already using solar energy to heat water. And represented a major advance for their time compared to wood and coal furnaces.
They also had the option of using artificial gas obtained by combustion of coal, but it cost ten times more than what it costs to our natural gas today. Electricity existed, but was even more expensive if it was available in the city.
Many homes used solar water heaters. In 1897, 30% of households in Pasadena were equipped with them. As the technical development, solar systems began to be used in Arizona, Florida and other U.S. temperate territories.
By 1920, tens of thousands of solar water heaters had been sold already, but then began to discover in the country large deposits of oil and natural gas. And then they stopped to sell organic solar heaters to switch to fossil fuel-based heaters.
Today, solar water heating has reached a new peak live in the United States, according to the California Energy Commission, only in that state and there are half a million of them.
