Solar Highways: Electricity Generation Roads

in Solar technology,Transportation

The statement of Scout Brusaw is basic: “a series of highways of solar panels may create enough energy for the planet”

Brusaw has a lot of hopes in this project; they may be the solution for the problem of global warming. Based on a research from Caltech Energy suggest that covering just 1.7% of the continental U.S. land surface with photovoltaic (PV) solar energy collectors could produce enough power to meet the nation’s total energy demand. We’ve seen here, panels with more than 60% of efficiency. Bursaw thought that it’s a curious fact that these highways cover exactly 1.7% of the national territory.

Solar highways would generate enough energy to light them at night and illuminate buildings, according to previous calculations every mile could feed 500 households.

Highways consist of 3 layers with an independent network to feed energy, optical fiber where TV signal and telecommunications may be transmitted.

He estimates that the production of a 12′ x 12′ block will cost 5 thousand dollars, so it would take 4.84 billion dollars to achieve the goal.

Even though its researches and calculations still have a long way ahead. It’s a very promising proposal and the first time I read it, I was amazed by how far solar energy can go.
