What is Global Warming?
Climate has always varied; the problem of climatic change is that during the last century the rate of these variations accelerated in a very anomalous way, now it affects the planetary life. When looking for the cause of this acceleration in the global warming, some scientists found that there was a direct relation between the global heating or climatic change and the increase of greenhouse gas discharges or greenhouse effect, caused mainly by industrialized societies.
A phenomenon worries to the world: global warming and its direct influence, the climatic change, which occupies good part of the international scientific community efforts to study it and to control it, because, they affirm, it puts in risk the future of the humanity.
Why does it worry so much? Well-known scientists agree that the increase of greenhouse effect gas concentration in the atmosphere is bringing alterations to the climate. They also agree that the greenhouse effect gases discharges have been very intense since the Industrial Revolution, moment where the action of the man on the nature became intense.
Originally, a natural phenomenon
Greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon that allows life in Earth. It is caused by a series of gases that are in the atmosphere, causing that part from the heat of the sun that our planet reflects is caught maintaining the average temperature global in +15º centigrade, favorable to the life, instead of -18º centigrade, that would be injurious.
That is how, during many million years, the natural greenhouse effect maintained Earth’s whether to a relatively stable temperature and allowed life to be developed. Greenhouse gases retained sun’s heat near the surface of the Earth, helping the evaporation of superficial water to form clouds, which give back the water to the Earth, in a vital cycle that had stayed in balance.
During about 160 thousand years, Earth had two periods in which global average temperatures were around 5º lower centigrade, then present ones. Change was slow, passed several thousands of years to leave a glacial era. Now, nevertheless, greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere are growing quickly, owing to the fact that the world fossil fuels burnings amount increases every time and destroys forests and prairies, that otherwise, could absorb carbon dioxide and favor a balanced temperature.
Therefore, international scientific community has alerted that if world-wide development, population increase and power consumption based on fossil fuels, continue increasing to present rates, before 2050 carbon dioxide concentrations will have duplicated itself in respect to the Industrial Revolution. This could cause unfortunate consequences such as an increase of global warming.
