The United States Commends Spain For Its Leadership In Renewable Energy

Paula Dobriansky, Undersecretary of State for Global Affairs and Democracy of the United States and head of the delegation of that country in the negotiations of the Kyoto Protocol, has praised Spain for its global leadership position in renewable energies, which represents an efficient and clean model in the fight against climate change.

She has only been recognized once in these negotiations, with a long applause when the Climate Summit in Bali, after 16 hours of delay, decided to join the consensus already reached by the 192 signatories to the Convention to Combat Climate Change by the UN.

The Secretary of State has remained two days in Madrid to attend a seminar on the future of the energy sector. “Spain is a world leader in renewable energy. One out of two major wind companies are Spanish. Iberdrola said it would install a 500 megawatt photovoltaic energy, and carries 1704 megawatt. Abengoa is constructing the largest solar power plant in United States. Your nation is the most researched and has a higher growth in photovoltaics“, she said about Spain.

However, despite the praise, Dobriansky said nothing about a change in the attitude of United States regarding the Kyoto Protocol. Aware that in December to attend her eighth and final Climate Summit in Poznan, Poland, and as an officer retiring from the White House was right to point out that it would not leave anything attached to the staff in place.

Even so, only had good words to his role and that of his country in the negotiations of the Kyoto Protocol, and played the position of international isolation and unilaterally define the position of United States in this area: “Bush has always said that the fight against climate change was important. He announced in January that by 2025 the United States will cease to grow in emissions. “

Dobriansky said the two presidential candidates have positions on climate change, although none of them have set national targets to be resolved by United States to reduce their emissions. Believes that to combat climate change must be to diversify the source of power with the use of renewable and other but also with nuclear.

Finally, Dobriansky expressed concern about the impacts of global warming in the Arctic and Antarctica, and anticipated in the coming weeks will be announced in Washington in this regard.
