Solar Energy Promises Mobile Phones That Don’t Need To Be Charged

Worry that the battery of your cell phone, iPod or BlackBerry will run out will be a thing of the past according to a leading manufacturer of solar cells from United Kingdom.

Speaking to BusinessGreen.com, Bob Hertzberg, chairman and founder of G24 Innovations (G24i), said that improvements in battery life and thin film solar cells could be combined resulting in mobile devices that don´t need to be charged, and they may be available within three years.

G24i has launched a mobile phone charger that has the size of a tablecloth and a phone can be charged in 8 hours even in indoor or cloudy locations.

However, Hertzberg, who is also the founder of the investing firm Renewable Capital talked earlier in the Assembly of the State of California, is convinced that the company will soon send a panel small enough to fit on the back of an appliance the size of a BlackBerry that can generate enough power to make sure the battery is never low.

He said that improvements in battery design, which means the devices will soon take up to one week charged, the manufacturer may charge the device once in the factory and then leave everything in the hands of the solar cells to make sure the battery is constantly at the top.
Regarding to energy and carbon savings, Hertzberg said that the proposal will also allow manufacturers to market products that will never need to be recharged.

Joined the recent news that Apple has patented an iPod with solar LCD panel emphasized the fact that the leading electronics manufacturers are already investigating ways to integrate solar cells into their devices.
Hertzberg comments came as G24i revealed plans to increase its manufacturing capacity to ensure the investment of $ 20 billion from the banking giant Morgan Stanley.

The company plans to initially target its solar cell phone charger and LED lamp market in the developed world. However, it also aims to develop a wide range of products based on its flexible red film cells sensitized with salt, including back packs, laptop bags, and long term, solar panels that could be integrated into buildings and create natural and interior lighting.
