Portugal Will Have The Biggest Solar Energy Plant In The World

in Solar Energy

According to estimations of the president of the Association of Renewable Energies Companies, Antonio Sá da Costa, the source of wind energy installed for the year 2012 will be of 5,700 mW, produced by waves of 250 mW, while water energy will round 6200 mW for 2015.

Sá da Costa predicts that in 2020, with proper investments Portugal may reach a goal of using 60% renewable energies.

All of this without counting on the construction on the Baldio das Ferrarías valley, in the suburbs of the city of Moura, where the biggest solar plant in the world is being built; taking advantage from 2,500 hours/sun each year, as said by their mayor, José María Pos-de-Mina.

This solar energy central will cost around 330 million dollars and will have an area of 114 hectares, where 350,000 solar panels are being installed. It will begin producing 62 mW “and by doing it, CO2 emissions will be reduced in 87000 tons” said Pos-de-Mina.

“With 62 million watts, our network will have 12 times the best production in the world, nowadays in Germany”

However, even though the Moroura central doesn’t start to work with its firsts 240 panels, Portugal already has the biggest solar central in the world, cleaning water for 8,000 households. The Solar Central of Serpa.

According to eh Italian engineer Piero dal Maso, Catavento executive, the Portuguese company that developed this project; It will produce with its central 30 gW/hour each gear, enough to avoid 30,000 tons of greenhouse gases emissions.

After several decades where no advantage was taken out of wind, situation changed radically and by the end of 2006 Portugal had 1,055 wind energy generators, equivalent to 59% of the expected goal for 2010. The construction of wind energy generators is expected to rise in 536 new units.

In Aguçadoura, north shores of Portugal, 2.25 mW of energy produced by the motion of the ocean will reach land via a submarine cable, supporting the national network from the government company “Electricidad de Portugal”.

A modest amount of energy, but its importance relies on being the first electric central in the world using the motion of the ocean as a renewable energy, with an unpredictable potential for the development of many alternative energies, watered, photovoltaic, wind, geothermal, biomass etc.
