Eigg, The World’s First Self-Sufficient Island

in Renewable Energy,Solar Energy

The island of Eigg is a small island in Scotland, where the inhabitants have managed to generate all the energy consumed by an investment of $ 3 million dollars that combines solar energy, wind energy and hydropower.

The self-supply system is built to generate 95% of the energy that the island needs, with a storage battery system and two diesel generators in case of emergency. It took 10 years to finish the project which was completed last February. 45 houses are connected to the system, 6 buildings and 20 shops along the 10 miles covered by the system.

The houses have access to 5 kW and the shops 10 kW, which requires them to take advantage of the light as much as possible, since 5kW is less than half the energy that a home in the United States has access to.
