Cuba Advances in the development of Solar Energy

The transformation system of solar radiation by photovoltaic conversion continues in expansion in remote mountainous and rural zones in Cuba, supporting the Energetic Revolution to reduce the dependency on petroleum.

More than 460 facilities work in those places, in several hospitals, social schools, boarding schools, 150 social circles and about 2,300 primary schools, as informed by Barbara Rodriguez, of the Ministry of Computer Science and Communications.

Barbara Rodriguez talked in the Cojimar’s School of Social Workers, at the Special Session about Renewable Energy of the XV Technique and Science National Forum.

For the fist time, the National Committee of the Forum, a movement with no background on social involving projects, is going to debate, not only the possibilities of taking much more advantage form solar radiation, they are also debating biomass, sucro-energetics, biogas, wind energy, thermal energy, photovoltaic energy and others.

Technicians, specialists, professionals and qualified workers talked about their experiences on non energy consumption water pumping, hidroenergy, hybrid systems and international initiatives on this field.

Applications of the photovoltaic solar energy, by means of panels constructed by the Electronic Industry, are used with better profit than the other conventional sources, particularly in remote zones where the lines of the National Electric Energetic System do not arrive, even its use is becoming general in water pumping.

According to this researches, solar energy is a definitive element on sustainable development, because every inch of Cuban territory gets daily a huge amount of solar radiation, equivalent to 500 grams of combustible oil or 5 kWh, this numbers are almost invariable during the year and in they apply overall the island

Environmental contamination by the combustion of fossil fuels threaten the stability of weather and life in the Planet, where the installed capacity for solar heating reached 60 million of kilowatts in 2003, the one who got more importance aside from hydraulics and biomass.
