The technology of solar water heaters is very basic. Just panels with tubes inside, there are not nanotechnologies, glass or silicon or current conversions. Just put a tube in your ceiling, put it in a box and return this water to your home. Solar water heaters can provide up to 90% of hot water from a house and nearly 30% on cloudy days.
A recent study in England (not the sunniest place over the planet) has determined that an average household could save up to $ 450 a year with their use. For countries that have more sun than England things are much better. But let´s work with 450 and multiply it for the 80 million homes that are in the United States, means a saving of 30 billion dollars in a single year.
All that energy would come from renewable sources. No more gas bills, only one facility and 10 or more years of very cheap hot water.
Seeing these numbers, why aren’t more people installing solar panels? Just because we do not yet have the culture to do so, it is much easier to go to Home Depot to buy a gas heater and any plumber can install it. Certainly a solar water heater can also be installed by any plumber they just have to see the diagram in the instructions.
Our task, as people aware of climate change and the benefits of renewable energy, solar energy in this case; is to transmit our knowledge to as many people as possible and gradually changing today´s thinking.
