The Nigerian government has recently announced its intention to invest in solar energy to provide electricity to 10 rural communities that lack access to the national grid. The initiative proposed by the Minister of Science and Technology of Nigeria will benefit 5000 people and will cost approximately 1.25 million dollars.
Besides from providing an ideal solution to power these rural communities, solar panels also help to pump water from storage tanks. The Director of Science and Technology Adenike Boyo said that solar energy has advantages over other alternatives, “the average life of the solar panels is 30 years, according to the manufacturer. Their maintenance is minimal, all that the villagers have to do is to remove the dust and the battery will last at least 10 years”
