Amazing solar building site of the Hawaii Gateway Energy Center

Gateway Energy Center of Hawaii (HGEC) is a facility of 350 square meters and 3.4 million dollars located on the coast of Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. The new building houses the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii and Technology Park and Ocean Sciences of Hawaii. As can be seen in the images below, the HGEC is a fascinating deployment of solar energy potential, together with an efficient construction.

The entire building is designed as a thermal chimney that captures and creates warm air currents using thermodynamic principles. Due to its design and orientation, the building uses only 20% of the electricity used by a building of similar proportions.

Besides being very well designed, with solar panels capable of producing over 24 thousand kilowatt hours of electricity a year, enough to keep the building going. It was awarded with the Platinum LEED certification.

  1. With a state like Hawaii, they really need a back up for their power sources. This is a great way of dealing with Hawaii’s shortage in electricity. Way to go!!
